He scored 40 runs in his debut match against Sri Lanka. Iyer was a regular member of the Indian team in both T20I and ODI cricket in 2018. He was also named in the Indian squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. However, he was ruled out of the tournament due to a thumb injury. Iyer made his Test debut for India in 2021. He scored 75 runs in his debut match against New Zealand. He became the first Indian batsman to score a century in his debut Test match and a half-century in the second innings. Iyer was appointed the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. He led KKR to the final of the IPL, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings. In August 2022, Iyer underwent surgery for a recurring lower-back injury. He has been ruled out of the entire 2023 IPL season.
