He made his first-class debut for Colts Cricket Club in 2014. In the 2016-17 season, he topped the Tier-A run charts with 1016 runs at 59.76. Samarawickrama was called up to the Sri Lanka national team for their Test series against Pakistan in September 2017. He made his Test debut in the first match of the series, scoring 38 runs in the first innings. Samarawickrama has played 8 Test matches, scoring 281 runs at an average of 23.41.
