Maharaj made his first-class debut for KwaZulu-Natal in 2006-07 and his List A debut in 2009-10. He was selected for the South Africa A team in 2010-11 and toured Bangladesh with the team. He made his Test debut for South Africa in November 2016 against Australia in Perth. He took 5 wickets in the match, including 4 in the second innings.
