Rauf was born in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, in 1993. He started playing cricket at a young age and quickly rose through the ranks of the Pakistani domestic cricket system. He made his first-class debut for the Northern cricket team in 2016. In 2018, he was selected to play for the Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Rauf’s performances in the PSL led to his selection for the Pakistan national team in January 2020. He made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe and took 2 wickets in his first match. He then made his T20I debut against Bangladesh and took 3 wickets in his first match. Rauf has been a regular member of the Pakistan team since his debut. He has played in 22 ODIs and taken 39 wickets. He has also played in 62 T20Is and taken 83 wickets. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2021 T20 World Cup, with 13 wickets in 7 matches.
