He is the son of New Zealand rugby union coach and former player John Mitchell. Mitchell made his first-class debut for Northern Districts in 2011-12. He has played for Canterbury since 2020. In 2018-19, he was the leading run-scorer in the Super Smash, with 446 runs at an average of 49.55. This earned him his maiden call-up to the New Zealand national team for the home T20I series against India in February 2019.
Mitchell made his T20I debut against India on 6 February 2019. He scored 17 runs off 12 balls in his debut innings. He made his Test debut for New Zealand against England on 29 November 2019. He scored 172 runs in the tournament, including an unbeaten 72 against England in the semi-finals. In 2022, Mitchell was signed by the Rajasthan Royals for the Indian Premier League.
